Popular Music Books in Process Series

Co-sponsored by IASPM-US, JPMS, and the Popcon, online, July 13, 2021.

The organizers of Popular Music Books in Process (or PMBiP) have been scheduling weekly conversations with authors talking about their books since June, 2020. I was excited to have the opportunity to discuss God Rock, Inc. with my friends and co-panelists Nathan Myrick (author of Music for Others: Care, Justice, and Relational Ethics in Christian Music, Oxford University Press, 2021) and Marcell Silva Steuernagel (author of Church Music Through the Lens of Performance, Routledge, 2021). In our conversation, we discussed what discourse on Christian music might contribute to popular music critism and scholarship, touched upon topics that our books have in common (Christian music, ethics, theology, and performance, among others) and responded to many questions from a very engaged audience of attendees. Much thanks to the series organizers, Kimberly Mack, Eric Weisbard, and Carl Wilson. The conversation was recorded and is available on YouTube (see below); if you are interested in other talks in the PMBiP series, browse through Eric Weisbard’s YouTube channel.
